'Sing-Off' Producer Joel Gallen Signs First-Look Deal With Sony TV

Hot off the success of the second cycle of NBC's reality series The Sing-Off, the show's executive producer Joel Gallen and his production company Tenth Planet Prods. have signed a one-year first look deal with Sony Pictures TV, the studio behind the singing competition.

After 25 years of working in specials, including executive producing the last 7 Comedy Central Roasts, all 4 years of CNN Heroes, the MTV Movie Awards for 12 consecutive years from 1995 to 2006, George Clooney's Hope for Haiti telethon as well as the 2001 telethon America: a Tribute to Heroes, Gallen expended to series with MTV's reality show America's Best Dance Crew. Gallen and Tenth Planet are now heading into Season 6 of the dance show. "I'm excited to be entrenched in the series business after so many years of focusing on Specials," WME-repped Gallen said. "I feel rejuvenated and look forward to developing and producing many more projects with Sony." He is looking to rev up development under the Sony TV deal and has tapped Nikki Gillingham as head of development. She was most recently a producer on CNN Heroes and also worked closely with Gallen Hope for Haiti. This past Monday, The Sing-Off set series highs with a 3.3/9 in 18-49 and 9.5 million viewers overall.

‘Queen’ Producer Plans Pink Floyd Movie

Andy Harries, producer of The Queen and The Damned United, is planning a movie based around the Pink Floyd track Another Brick In the Wall. But it’s not a remake of Alan Parker’s?Pink Floyd movie The Wall. Rather, it tells the true story of the schoolchildren who sang on the 1979 number one and their maverick music teacher. Harries tells me it’s “Dead Poets Society meets School of Rock.” He’s optioned the life story of music teacher Alan Renshaw who arrived at a struggling north London comprehensive (public) school in the late 70s, determined to shake things up. His class eventually ends up singing the chorus on the Pink Floyd track – whose controversial lyrics, flicking a V-sign at authority, end up getting Renshaw sacked. First-time writer Steve Thompson is writing the script for Left Bank and BBC Films. But Harries admits he hasn’t got the rights to the song yet. Songwriter Roger Waters can be notoriously difficult but he’s touring The Wall next year, so the timing could be propitious.
